BREWERY HOUSE of REHABILITATION

“Brothers who are sick or weak should be given a type of work or craft that will keep them busy without overwhelming them or driving them away.”

The Rule of St. Benedict

The Brewery House of Recovery consists of communal living units and a beer production facility. The housing units are for individuals who are receiving care for alcoholism. Borrowing from traditions of collective healing in monasteries and sanatoriums, the House provides a place of group recovery where individuals who share similar struggles can work on their recovery together through cohabitation and labor therapy. Working through the different stages of the brewery, individuals come into controlled contact with material ingredients that make beer and begin the process of regaining agency over the substance that they have previously struggled with. House of Recovery is located in the center of the city, in the waterfront district, where members of this community can be reintroduced to the everyday life of Reykjavik under the care and support of the group.
