THE SPINNING STUDIO
“Re-thinking the Work Space”
In studio, each student is given a work desk, a chair, and a locker. Throughout the semester, students deal with a lack of storage area and workspace. Desks are cluttered with models, plots are piled in a
giant mess on the floor, and there is little space on the wall for students to pinup. In the end, there is little space left to work with, let alone space for a laptop. The competition called for the reorganization and consolidation of various studios on campus for student work spaces that increase the functionality of existing studios while developing a model assemblage for future way of working.
For organization and the efficient use of studio space, we propose a workstation consisting of layers for assigned activities and items. Elements are attached to a column, where individuals can adjust accordingly to their needs. Elements are able to pivot on the column, which allows students to redistribute their given space. This is a redevelopment of the traditional studio work space that is conscious of the dominant presence and the increasing importance of the computer in the design process.
